Paint Like a Pro

Want to go for a ride?

Before we get into some tips to help you paint like a pro, let me tell you about my biggest paint mistake! My first house was a cute little bungalow style house in north Oklahoma City. I wanted a gold living room (as many of us did back in the early 2000’s). I got my swatches, picked the paint, bought the paint and my father in law got most of the room done before I got home from work. I was so excited to see my first house turning out so pretty! Much to my dismay, I walked into a yellow school bus!?!?!? I certainly didn’t want to go for a ride on a yellow school bus everyday in my home! IT WAS AWFUL!!!!! Looking back, the color AND the finish was wrong. I didn’t take into account the 6 windows in the living room, nor did I put any samples up and see the color in the sunlight. A very rookie mistake. I think we have all made those! I have made several paint disasters over the years, but let’s talk about some tips that can help ease the pain and prevent some!

A Few Don’ts

Don’t color match - Every paint company has a base color that’s different. If you want the exact color then use the maker of that paint color.

Don’t use semi gloss on walls - This finish can look cheap, as it reflects light instead of absorbing it. Go with eggshell or satin for walls. The darker the color the more matte the finish should be.

Don’t put samples up over existing paint - Buy white paint, paint the wall, let it dry, THEN put your samples up in a few areas with different lighting.

Don’t paint without prep - When you pay for a painter, you’re actually paying for their time to properly tape and prep the space. Don’t miss this step!

Don’t use individual swatches on paper from the store - Always find a swatch or pick one color with many shades THEN get samples. You won’t know the color until you see the paint in person.

A Few Do’s

Do your research - Read up on colors, look on Pinterest and settle on a few different hues of the same color for your samples.

Do hire a designer - If you are painting your whole house, an hour consult ($75-$125) could save you TONS of money and emotional stress!??!? There are several amazing designers in the city that can help. You are gaining from their experience. There is a science to colors!!!

Do hire a paint pro - If you don’t have the time to do it right, then hire someone to do it for you!

Do have patience - The sample process could take a week or more. Don’t make quick decisions and know you may have several trips back to the store for samples!

From My Heart

Paint color questions are my number one question on social media, texts, phone calls and messages. I am here to help and I want to help, but remember this is my livelihood for my family. My time and expertise is worth something. So, before you hit me or another designer up for free, ask yourself if you should just schedule a time or a phone call out of respect. Honestly, I don’t mind answering questions here and there, but if you really want my expertise then hire me!

Happy painting!!
