A Guide to Rugs

Choosing the right rug for your space can be a challenge. As a designer, I have learned a few tips and tricks that I would like to share to make your rug shopping experience easy!

But before you start shopping, there are two important decisions you need to make. First, you must measure your space to determine the size of rug needed. Then, you can select the rug material that best fits your needs and style.

So, let’s start with the living room! When selecting the size of rug needed for your space, consider your room and furniture sizes. If your space permits, I love the look of a 9’ x 12’ rug in a living room. It allows for the rug to truly shine due to its size. However, a 8’ x 10’ rug can look equally amazing under a smaller sofa and chairs. I highly recommend selecting the largest size appropriate for your furniture, rather than a rug that is slightly smaller.

In the dining room, the previous rules apply! I would recommend selecting a rug slightly larger than your dining table for an elevated look. I prefer rectangular rugs under rectangular tables, and round rugs under round tables.

A rug in a bedroom adds so much texture and detail, they are a must in your design! When selecting rugs to go under a bed, there are two things to consider. If your space can accommodate a 9’ x 12’ rug, this will fit perfectly under your bed and nightstands. If a 8’ x 10’ rug better accommodates your space, shift the rug toward the foot of the bed, excluding the nightstands, for an elevated look.

Lastly, the material of your rug can truly affect the overall look and feel of your space. I created the guide below so that you can compare different rug types to ensure your selection is a reflection of your style and needs.

I hope these tips make selecting a rug a piece of cake next time you are ready to shop. Choosing the right rug can be overwhelming but these tips will help with size and texture for sure. Reach out to us if you need help!
