The Most Honest Room in the House

You can tell a lot about someone by their powder bath.

It may be one of the smallest rooms in the home, but somehow, it often says the most. The kitchen has to function. The living room has to accommodate a crowd. The primary bedroom has to offer a place to retreat at the end of the day. Most rooms carry a long list of expectations for how they need to look, feel, and perform.

But the powder bath?

The powder bath has the permission to have fun.

There are fewer rules here. No need to appeal to everyone or consider how an entire family will move through the space each morning. Instead, there is an opportunity to create something purely expressive. Something that feels a little bolder, a little more unexpected, and definitely a little more like you.

And maybe that freedom is exactly why we believe you can learn so much about someone from their powder bath.

Some are moody and dramatic. Others are colorful, feminine, collected, traditional, or just a little strange. One might be wrapped entirely in a wallpaper that would feel like too much anywhere else. Another might begin with an antique chest turned vanity, a piece of art collected years ago, or a marble with enough movement to become art all on its own.

These are often the rooms where we make the decisions we might talk ourselves out of elsewhere.

Paint the ceiling. Use the wallpaper. Hang the strange piece of art. Mix the metals. Choose the light fixture that makes you smile.

Do the thing.

Because in a room this small, there is something incredibly beautiful about letting every decision be intentional without requiring every decision to be practical.

And while the powder bath may feel like a small detail within the scale of an entire home, it is one of the spaces your guests are almost guaranteed to experience.

They may never see your primary bedroom or walk through your closet. They might not venture upstairs or see every thoughtfully designed corner of your home.

But eventually, someone is going to ask where the restroom is.

And when they open that door, we think they should learn a little something about you.

A powder bath may only be experienced for a few minutes, but that doesn't mean those few minutes should be forgotten.

Perhaps that is why we love designing them so much!

There is less pressure for a powder bath to behave.

It can be sophisticated and playful. Traditional and unexpected. Moody and feminine. Collected and completely unconventional. It does not have to fit neatly into one particular aesthetic because neither do the people living beyond its walls.

In many ways, the powder bath becomes one of the purest expressions of personality within a home.

It is a small room with permission to say something big.

A home should tell us something about the people who live there.

Not simply through the largest rooms or the most expensive pieces, but through the small decisions that could only belong to them. The things chosen simply because they were loved. The unexpected moments. The spaces that make someone walk in and immediately think,

Of course this is their powder bath.

Because sometimes the smallest room in the house is the one willing to tell the truest story.

And maybe that's what makes the powder bath the most honest room in the house.
