Things Are Looking Up!
One of my favorite areas of a house to design is the ceiling! It can bring so much impact but there are so many choices!
Let’s break down a few options and gain some insights into some quick tips for design.
Ceiling Height Can Determine Design Choices
If your ceiling is lower than 10’ I wouldn’t suggest accentuating the ceiling with dark paint or adding dark wood elements as it could make your home feel smaller. I would paint it white or the same color as the walls. Every home varies but do your research on inspiration photos to make sure the look you desire fits your home layout and ceiling height.
Painting Your Ceiling
When you paint your ceiling, always use FLAT paint. You do not want the light from outside or inside to reflect off the ceiling. Ceilings with flat paint look more professional and more open. You can paint a ceiling with a pop of color in small spaces to accentuate a design (no it doesn’t make it feel smaller or darker). You can also paint it white to make a room feel more bright and open or simply paint it the same color of the walls just in a flat finish.
Wood Plank Ceiling
Adding texture with tongue and groove wooden planks can make quite a statement! There are different types of wood species to choose from and you can stain, paint or whitewash to complete the look!
Beams
A look that is timeless and adds character and style… beams. I will take them any way I can get them! There are so many choices when it comes to beams. Start with the room layout and ceiling height to determine what kind of beam would be best.
Coffered Ceiling
A coffered ceiling is grid pattern of recesses. If a surface is “coffered” it’s not smooth. This architectural detail has been popular for centuries! Talk about timeless. You can play with the depth, shape and pattern to get a true custom feel in any home.
Other Options
You can panel, add medallions around lights, mount ceiling tiles or have a tray ceiling to name a few more. Be creative, have fun and go for it!
