What to Expect: Soft Design

We have talked about tile, lighting, countertops, and more here on the blog in the past. But, you don’t have to have a construction project for us to help you design! Here at Micah & Co, we refer to the decorating side of design as “soft design.” That’s where we source furniture, rugs, art, and accessories. Sometimes clients hire us for soft design only, and sometimes it is part of the new build or remodel process. Let’s dive a little deeper into our soft design process!

Let’s Get Started!

The first step is to schedule a consultation, during which we will discuss the needs for your space(s). Knowing how you use your space is crucial in determining which items to source. Whether you have children and/or pets, if you eat meals on your sofa, if it’s mainly used by immediate family or you throw Gatsby style parties on the regular… these are all things that will determine the types of pieces that will best fit your lifestyle. We will also talk through your design style and ask for inspiration photos so that we know the look you would like to achieve. Then there’s the “B” word… “Budget.” In this case, it’s not a bad word, though! We always work hard to respect our clients’ budgets. We want you to not only love the end result, but also be comfortable paying for it.

Measurements Needed

If you don’t already have floor plans, we will measure the space(s) and get to work on drawing furniture layouts. Have you ever ordered something without checking measurements only to be disappointed when it arrives and doesn’t work? Our job is to make sure you avoid those costly mistakes!

Finding The Source

Once we know the types and sizes of pieces you need, we get to work sourcing specific items. For some clients, we source everything from online retailers. For others who prefer to touch, see, and feel things first, we will make an appointment at a local furniture store and make selections there. For many clients, it’s a hybrid of both! 

The Ordering Process

After everything is selected, we get to ordering! We can provide product links for you to place your own orders independently. Or, for a full-service approach, we can place and track all orders for you! We can either have everything shipped to a receiver where it can be held until everything arrives, or we can ship it to your home for you to store until all of the orders have been fulfilled.


Now, The Fun Begins!

The final, most exciting step is install! This is where you get your HGTV moment of seeing your space transformed! It may not happen in two weeks’ time like on TV, but you won’t run the risk of having your neighbors fill your basement with sand in an attempt to give you a beach retreat in your own home (Trading Spaces, anyone?)! Install days are incredibly gratifying because all of the preparation and planning pays off and you get to begin enjoying your new freshly decorated space!
